More than 1,100 food safety professionals joined our recent webinar, SQF Edition 10. Business Value Now. SQF Edition 10 logoAudit Readiness for 2027., to better understand what the updated Code means for their businesses, teams, and audit readiness.

The engagement around this discussion reflects what many across the industry already recognize. Food safety programs are evolving rapidly, and organizations are seeking practical guidance on preparing for the next phase of certification requirements.

SQF Edition 10 represents the next evolution of the Safe Quality Food program. Developed through a multi-year process involving retailers, certification bodies, auditors, practitioners, and technical experts, the updated Code is designed to strengthen food safety systems while improving consistency, risk management, and operational accountability.

For SQF-certified sites, the message from the webinar was clear. Preparation should begin now.

What Is SQF Edition 10?

SQF Edition 10 is the latest edition of the SQF Code and introduces several updates intended to strengthen food safety management systems across the global supply chain.

While SQF Edition 9 remains the official Code currently in use, Edition 10 will become the foundation for future certification audits, which could begin as early as January 2027, pending final GFSI benchmarking review.

The updated Code maintains the core principles food manufacturers and retailers already rely on, while sharpening focus on areas, such as:

  • Food safety culture
  • Change management
  • Risk-based environmental monitoring
  • Risk-weighted audit scoring

The structure also introduces a more digital-first experience, designed to improve usability, navigation, and consistency across languages and global operations.

Why SQF Edition 10 Matters

Food safety risks are not static. Supply chains continue to evolve, facilities face workforce changes, automation is increasing, and regulatory expectations continue to rise.

Edition 10 was designed to reflect those realities.

During the webinar, SQFI leaders emphasized that the Code changes are based on lessons learned across thousands of certified sites globally. The goal is not to create unnecessary complexity. The goal is to strengthen the controls that most directly impact food safety performance and certification confidence.

For retailers and buyers, SQF certification remains a trusted signal that a supplier has implemented a recognized food safety management system benchmarked to global expectations.

For manufacturers, certification helps create operational discipline, customer confidence, and stronger supply chain relationships.

Edition 10 builds on that foundation.

Food Safety Culture Moves Beyond Conversation

One of the most discussed aspects of Edition 10 is the expanded focus on food safety culture.

Food safety culture is no longer viewed as an abstract concept or employee engagement initiative. Under Edition 10, organizations will need to demonstrate how food safety culture is actively measured, reinforced, and supported throughout operations.

Planning food safety culture includes leadership involvement, communication practices, employee accountability, and continuous improvement efforts.

Organizations preparing for Edition 10 should begin asking practical questions now:

  • How is food safety discussed across departments?
  • How are employees trained and reinforced?
  • Are management teams visibly engaged in food safety priorities?
  • How is feedback captured and addressed?
  • The webinar reinforced that culture cannot exist only in policy documents. Auditors and certification bodies will increasingly expect evidence that food safety behaviors are operationalized within the business. See our free Food Safety Culture Assessment Plan guidance document.
Change Management Becomes a Defined Requirement

Edition 10 also introduces stronger expectations around change management.

In many facilities, operational changes happen constantly. Equipment upgrades, supplier shifts, formulation updates, staffing changes, and process modifications can all introduce risk if not properly evaluated.

Edition 10 formalizes the expectation that organizations assess and document food safety impacts when significant operational changes occur.

For many companies, this may require more structured internal communication and cross-functional coordination between quality, operations, procurement, maintenance, and leadership teams.

The webinar highlighted that organizations should begin reviewing current approval workflows now to determine whether food safety risks are consistently evaluated before operational changes are implemented. See the new guidance document for change management.

Environmental Monitoring Takes a More Risk-Based Approach

Environmental monitoring programs are also receiving increased attention under Edition 10.

Rather than relying on generic or one-size-fits-all approaches, Edition 10 places greater emphasis on facility-specific risk assessment.

That means environmental monitoring programs should align with actual operational risks, product exposure, and processing conditions within each site.

For some organizations, that may require reassessing sampling strategies, documentation practices, or corrective action procedures.

During the webinar, our technical team emphasized that stronger environmental monitoring programs support both preventative controls and long-term operational confidence.

Audit Scoring Will Better Reflect Risk

Edition 10 introduces a more risk-weighted audit scoring model intended to better reflect the severity and significance of findings.

Not all findings carry the same food safety implications. The updated scoring approach is designed to place greater weight on higher-risk conditions, so audit outcomes more accurately reflect operational performance.

Based on the evidence collected by the SQF food safety auditor, each applicable clause of the SQF certification food safety audit is automatically scored in the audit report based on the following factors:

Core Clauses: Food Manufacturing

Audit Scoring Scale

Certification Outcomes by Score

For certified sites, that means preparation cannot focus only on passing audits. Organizations will need to evaluate how effectively risks are identified, minimized, and managed throughout operations.

A Digital-First SQF Code

Another major shift discussed during the webinar was the move to a digital-first Code structure.

The updated system is designed for clause-level navigation, easier cross-referencing, and improved consistency across supported languages.

SQFI also improved tools such as the Code Selector, which, based on the user selecting their Food Sector Category or categories, renders the applicable code(s).

The digital-first approach is intended to make the Code easier to use operationally, especially for global teams managing complex compliance environments.

What Sites Should Do in the Next Eight Months

The timeline before implementation is an opportunity to prepare with purpose, not a reason to delay.

Organizations should use the months ahead to educate management teams, train employees, and evaluate where systems may need refinement before Edition 10 audits begin.

Recommended priorities include:

Review Existing Food Safety Programs

Evaluate current programs against the new Edition 10 focus areas, including food safety culture, environmental monitoring, and change management.

Train Leadership Teams

Edition 10 places strong emphasis on management engagement and organizational accountability. Leadership alignment matters.

Engage Certification Bodies and Trainers

SQFI’s network includes more than 30 certification bodies and a broad community of trainers and consultants that can help sites prepare effectively.

Invest in Team Education

The SQF Edition 10 Conversion Course and additional implementation resources available through SQFI can help teams understand the operational impact of the changes.

Start Internal Conversations Early

Organizations that begin discussions now will have more time to strengthen processes, align departments, and avoid last-minute implementation pressure.
