SQF Edition 10: Why It Matters and How We’re Making Your Transition Easier

Aug 5, 2026

By LeAnn Chuboff, Vice President of Technical Affairs, SQFI

Discover what's changing in SQF Edition 10 and access the resources designed to make your transition easier.

As vice president of technical affairs at the SQF Institute, I've had the privilege of working alongside hundreds of food safety professionals, retailers, auditors, and technical experts to shape the next evolution of the SQF Code. This process has been a true industry collaboration, and the result is a code that reflects what you, the food industry, told us you needed: stronger, clearer, and more practical.

Edition 10 isn't just a new set of requirements. It's a sharpened focus on the areas where data and experience showed we needed to raise the bar: food safety culture, change management, environmental monitoring, and audit scoring. These aren't abstract concepts; they're the foundation of safe, resilient operations. We listened to your feedback, and we built Edition 10 to help you demonstrate, not just describe, your commitment to food safety.

Let's talk about food safety culture. For years, we've known that culture is the heartbeat of any food safety program. Edition 10 makes it something you can measure, reinforce, and improve, with clear leadership involvement and employee accountability. Auditors won't be looking for a policy binder; they'll be looking for evidence that food safety is part of daily work, effectively assessed, and continuously improved. We created a free Food Safety Culture Assessment Plan guidance document to help you evaluate where you stand and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.

Change management is another area where Edition 10 raises expectations. Operational changes happen constantly: new equipment, suppliers, formulations, staffing shifts. Each change can introduce risk if it isn't properly evaluated. Our new change management guidance document walks you through how to implement a systematic approach to managing significant changes to processes, products, and systems that impact food safety before they happen.

Environmental monitoring and audit scoring have also evolved. Edition 10 requires site-specific hazard analysis for pathogen monitoring and risk-weighted scoring for audits. This means your audit outcomes will reflect how you identify, minimize, and manage risks in real time.
