When Expertise Is Not Enough: What Food Safety Leadership Really Requires

Sustained food safety improvement requires more than strong technical expertise. It requires leaders who can navigate the adaptive challenges that accompany real change. Alan Tart, a recognized food safety leader with industry and regulatory experience,  explores the foundations of change leadership in food safety systems, drawing on insights from his recently posted multi-part article series examining why well-intended change efforts so often stall. This session is intended to equip food safety leaders with the mindset and tools needed to build resilient, adaptive systems that hold up under real-world pressure.

Participants will learn to:

  • Distinguish between technical problems and adaptive challenges in food safety systems
  • Interpret resistance as information about loss, risk, and identity—not just noncompliance
  • Hold steady under pressure rather than retreating when change becomes uncomfortable
  • Use authority to protect adaptive work and distribute leadership across the system
  • Design food safety change efforts that become durable, not dependent on personalities.
