WHAT IS CERTIFICATION?

Certification provides an independent and an external validation that produce and other foods, their production and manufacturing processes and related service complies with food regulations and other specified standards such as the SQF 1000 Code or the SQF 2000 Code. Certification enables a food supplier to give assurances that food they supply has been produced, prepared and handled according to the highest possible standards.

What does the Certification of SQF Systems Involve?

The certification of SQF Systems is managed by internationally accredited Certification Bodies who are licensed by the SQF Institute. The Certification Bodies oversee the activities of their SQF Auditors, ensuring that they are qualified and apply a professional audit service. The results of an audit are reviewed by the certification body expert review panel and an SQF Certificate is then issued.

Certification is a statement that the supplier's SQF System has been implemented in accordance with the SQF Guidelines and applicable regulatory requirements and that it is effective in managing food safety. It is also serves as a statement of the supplier's commitment to producing safe, quality food.

What are the criteria to become a licensed SQF Certification Body?

For a certification body to become licensed with the SQF Institute, they must demonstrate that they meet the requirements of ISO/IEC Guide 65/IEC:1996 and the SQF Guidance Document for Certification Bodies.

The Certification Body must be accredited by an IAF accreditation body that is approved by the SQF Institute.

The SQF Guidance Document for Certification Bodies specifies the criteria that certification bodies shall observe when operating third party certification of a suppliers SQF system. It provides guidance on ISO/IEC Guide 65:1996 in order to satisfy the requirements implicit in the certification of a SQF system and the product that is produced under these systems.

A copy of the SQF Guidance Document for Certification Bodies is available in electronic format on the SQF website.

How does a prospective SQF Certification Body become involved?

Applications are invited from groups that can meet the above criteria. An application form is attached and all details and forms are available in electronic format on the SQF website.
