HOW TO BECOME AN SQF EXPERT

What is an SQF Expert?

An SQF Expert is an individual, registered by SQFI to develop, validate, verify, implement and maintain SQF Systems. An individual who performs this service on behalf of their employer is termed an SQF Practitioner. An individual who performs this service on behalf of a client is termed an SQF Consultant.

What does Implementing and Maintaining SQF Systems Involve?

The integrity of the SQF Program relies on efficient, effective and competent implementation of SQF Systems. The SQF Expert's task is to make the process of implementing an SQF system as easy as possible on behalf of their employer or a client. They must ensure their employer or client understands the SQF Program, the relevant issues and they are able to confidently use their SQF system once implemented.

What are the criteria to become an SQF Consultant?

A SQF Consultant must be a registered by the SQFI, thereby demonstrating they have:

  • successfully completed recognised HACCP training and successfully completed recognised SQF Systems training
  • work experience in a technical, professional or supervisory position involving accountability and the exercise of judgement
  • operational experience with food hygiene and food safety based programs involving HACCP or other appropriate risk management systems
  • the relevant skills and basic knowledge necessary to support an SQF System in a specific sector of the food chain.

SQF Consultants must adhere to the SQF Code of Practice relating to Client Focus, Integrity, Competency, Professionalism and Accountability. Each applicant is then reviewed by an independent technical review panel who decide whether to grant registration.

Details are available in the Criteria for SQF Experts and applications can be obtained by contacting the SQF Institute (registration@sqfi.com).

How does an SQF Consultant become involved?

Prospective SQF Consultants must specify their area(s) of food sector knowledge and experience and demonstrate that they have met the above criteria.

Details of SQF Consultants are made available on the SQFI website and to Certification Bodies and to Suppliers seeking assistance to implement an SQF System.
