FDA’s new food facility registration system became available for use Monday, October 22 at 12:01 am. The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) requires that all food facilities (which include warehouses, distribution centers, processing facilities (but not retail outlets)) reregister with the agency between October 1, 2012 and December 31, 2012, although the agency did not have the updated registration system available for use on October 1. Effective Monday October 22, you may reregister facilities here.
Food facilities were previously required to register with the agency under the Bioterrorism Act of 2002. FSMA amended this section to statutorily require that an e-mail address of a contact for each facility be submitted, and that registrants assure the agency that inspection will be permitted. FSMA also imposes a new requirement that registrations be renewed and updated every two years. The new reregistration form has additional food categories to select from as well.
